Coach urges young athletes to shun money

Ibrahim Yahuza, the Head Coach, Kano State Taekwondo Association, urged young athletes to concentrate on building their career than being engrossed in monetary attractions.
Yahuza said inordinate ambition for financial gains had made many young athletes not to get to the peak of their career in sports.
``Money is good but should not be the focus of any athlete who wants to make a name in sports.
``The reason is that it has kept very good athletes abase when they eventually fail to get it.
``As upcoming athletes, the best thing to do is to concentrate on building skills through commitment to training with technical officials,’’ he said on telephone.
According to him, young athletes should work hard to outshine other contenders in national championships for identification and promotion.
``The performance of young athletes during national championships will give them the much required exposure that will help them to be identified for continental championships,’’ he said.
He urged them to be disciplined and adhere strictly to their training programmes as it would assist them to be proficient in their chosen sport.
``Discipline is a good quality expected from athletes who desire to reach the peak of their carrier. If an athlete is not disciplined, his success is at stake.
``There are principles and guidelines that athletes are taught which they must marry and apply during competitions as it will make them to excel,’’ he added.
Yahuza also appealed to taekwondo coaches to spread their training programmes for athletes to enable them to have a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of the sport.
