Ekpo backs F/Eagles as Nigeria confront Cuba today
The Nigeria national U-20 team lost 3-2 to Portugal in their opening fixture last Friday, but will confront Cuba today in their second group match.
And in an interview with our correspondent, Ekpo said the team could still salvage their campaign if they beat the Cubans today.
He said it is wrong to condemn the team early in the competition, believing that they have shown they have the capacity to do well if given enough support with the way they came back from 2-0 down to level up with the Portuguese.
“It is unfortunate that they lost their first match because it is very important for you to win your first game in a competition like this, but we don’t have to condemn the team yet because the tournament is just beginning. I think the team is not that bad, you can see it in the way they came back from 2-0 down to level up. That showed that there is something about them.
“We need to keep praying for the team and I believe they are going to come back strongly when they play their next match (against Cuba),” he said.
A loss for either Nigeria or Cuba could mean the end of the road for the team. The North Americans also lost their opening fixture to South Korea 1-2 and would be desperate to take something out of this one.
